Michael M. Ferguson, MD

I am a Board Certified psychiatrist, serving primarily Santa Barbara, Goleta and surrounding areas (Lompoc, Buellton, Ventura, and the Santa Ynez Valley). My mission is to create a non-threatening setting, and to deliver psychiatric care that is friendly and compassionate, and of the highest quality. Through my affiliation with Santa Barbara Behavioral Health, I can provide access to family therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and counseling.

I also have particular interest in working with people with problems of alcoholism and other addictions, and can assist with outpatient "detox" (when clinically appropriate). I will often provide psychiatric management of medications as well as offering "recovery sensitive" psychotherapy. Prescribing medications in addictive conditions can be risky, and I particularly wish to insure that any medication I might prescribe would be safe, and would address the unique needs of the newly recovering person.

My Experience

I have been engaged in the practice of psychiatry for over 25 years. I am certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the American Board of Addiction Medicine.

My experience as both a psychotherapist and prescribing physician enable me to clarify those situations in which the psychological problem would best respond to psychotherapy alone, or in combination with psychiatric medications. Most frequently treated problems include depression, anxiety, panic disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder (for adults and adolescents), Substance Abuse (including Dual Diagnosis) and Autistic Spectrum and Asperger’s Disorder issues in adolescents and adults.

I also assist other mental health professionals by providing psychiatric medication evaluation and treatment (this would also include deciding when to not recommend medication as a treatment).
